Dr. Wyche’s Tomatillo is a productive heirloom variety developed by Dr. John Wyche in Hugo, Oklahoma. Known for its sweet, pale yellow 1-2 inch fruits, it’s a great choice for fresh or cooked salsas. The plants are vigorous, and fruit is harvested when the husks fill and begin to split. The more ripe the fruit, the sweeter it becomes. Originally popularized by Suzanne Ashworth and Seed Savers Exchange, it’s easily grown like tomatoes.
Companion plants: Basil, Cilantro, Garlic, Marigolds, Yarrow, Borage, Onions, Parsley.
Far from: Corn, Dill, Potatoes, Eggplants.
Planting tip: Sow seeds indoors 6 weeks before last frost. Transplant outside late spring.
Harvesting tip: Harvest when papery husk that turns from green to brown as they ripen and splits open.
