This heirloom gets its name from the wartime poem “In Flanders Fields” where the author a Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae gives tribute to the fallen ones. Drought tolerant. Deer-resistant variety. Mildly toxic to grazing animals. Excellent for meadows as they self-seed easily without becoming weedy. Plants produce abundant tiny seeds that are very easy to gather and give as gifts. Companion plants: Marigolds, Phlox, Cosmos, Ornamental grasses, Bearded iris, Salvia, Alliums.  Far from: Cabbage, Broccoli, Kale, Brussels sprouts, Cauliflower, Collard greens. Planting tip: Seed stratification is required for 2 weeks. Poppies are started outdoors in early spring even when there is still a chance of frost. Transplant not recommended.
