Top Tips for Selecting Funeral & Sympathy Flowers

When it comes to ordering funeral flowers, it's important to choose the right arrangements to honor your loved one. Our florists at Scrim's have put together a guide to help you navigate this difficult process with care and respect.

What types of flowers are appropriate for funerals?

There are no 'traditional' funeral flowers anymore. Lilies, roses, carnations, and chrysanthemums were once the typical choice for funerals because they  were thought to symbolise love, purity, and remembrance.

However, we find that the flowers most appropriate for funerals are usually the most personal ones. When choosing flowers for a deceased loved one or even an acquaintance, it's important to consider their favorite colors, types of flowers they liked, or any personal meanings attached to certain flowers.

How do you choose the right sympathy arrangement?

Consider the relationship you had with the deceased when selecting an arrangement.

Close family members and friends will often send larger arrangements, like wreaths or casket sprays. These will serve as the main flowers for the memorial event, and are usually very personal.

For friends or acquaintances, smaller bouquets or one-sided vase arrangements are a thoughtful choice. If you know the colours and flowers the family will be using for the main flowers, you may want to echo these in your tribute, however this is not expected.

You might even consider sending one of our standard arrangements as a token of sympathy. Shop all of our flowers here.

What colors are suitable for funeral flowers?

White flowers are often chosen for their association with peace and sympathy, and are a safe choice when one is uncertain of what to send.

However, funerals are not only a time of mourning, but also a moment for celebrating the life of the deceased. Many people choose to go with muted, soft colours or even bright colours.

Consider selecting colors that the deceased may have cherished to pay tribute to their unique spirit.

Should I choose a one-sided or all-around flower arrangement?

The one-sided arrangement:

If you are sending the flowers to a funeral home or place of worship, we generally recommend sending a one-sided arrangement. Since the flowers are only visible from one side in these venues, it's best to arrange them accordingly.

The all-around arrangement:

When sympathy flowers are being sent to a private home, they will most likely be viewed from multiple angles. For this reason, we'd recommend that these arrangements be designed so that they can be appreciated all the way around.

How can you personalize a funeral arrangement?

Adding personal touches like favorite flowers or colors can make a funeral arrangement more meaningful. Consider including a special keepsake or note to honor the memory of your loved one.
